‘Off The Beat’ launches with a celebratory guitar riff, leading us on – a careering sub-four minute enchanting and energetic off the beat diversion from 2020’s hyper-restricted day to day. The guitar and keys weave around the taut rhythm section, with super-tight, no-nonsense, expert mixing desk wizardry by Patrick Collier.
Frontman/ lead vocalist Beni describes the Perry Vale Studios as being an extension of Collier’s body – his vast experience, no bullsh*t approach, cuts through the frills to expose the melody and capture the raw sound and energy of a band flourishing whilst recording with a man who has twiddled knobs for Morcheeba, Primal Scream and The House of Love amongst so very many.

This track – the 3rd in Fabian Jacks isolation-surfing 6 Pack of free* singles – seems like a perfectly timed addition to their incredibly well-received (“a dizzyingly catchy and energetic piece of pop-rock gold” Clout) release schedule, and a nice freebie-fillip to brighten up your isolated dance floor.
Unrated Magazine say FJ’s “sound echoes from a rich past, mixing new wave, disco, dance, dub and a heavy dose of eighties pop. Think The 1975 married to Queens of the Stone Age, having a fling with Vampire weekend and you can start to build a picture of a band bursting with energy & catchy tunes”.
As appealing but unlikely as that sounds, there’s currently a verve, confidence and edge to these new recordings that makes the listener sit up and pay attention… plus of course, any band who can fade out with a sea shanty (courtesy of Piera’s slick Sailor’s Hornpipe skills!) deserve some serious kudos.
